24 CA-3-A031053003 2025-03-04T06:33:31 Sahakarya - Building Self-Reliant Communities - II Sahakarya aims to improve socio-economic condition of selected communities by promoting equitable and representative community-based organizations (CBOs) capable of managing local resources and interacting with locally elected bodies and government agencies. The goal of the project is to contribute to the reduction of poverty in the hilly regions of Nepal by strengthening community-based organizations (CBOs) through economic and social development. The project is being implemented in the Mid and Far Western Districts: Jumla, Dadeldhura, Baitadi, Surkhet, and Dailekh, focusing on market-oriented agricultural production. The Canadian Executing Agency is the Centre for Studies and International Cooperation (CECI) and the Social Welfare Council (SWC) is the Nepalese government counterpart. The project was able to complete all the training (471), construction of small irrigation (65) and marketing infrastructure (17), distribution of improved seeds (2,421), plastic tunnels (435) and beekeeping equipment (594). The project reached a total of 801hecatres through the support to irrigation infrastructure. The average production of high value commodities per household after the project intervention was 891 kg/household and the total production was 4,657 tonnes of which 73% was marketed. The average income per household increased to $191 (from $72) through the sale of vegetables. 8406 households applied new High Value Commodities production technique (target was 8000) 84% of targeted households brought produce to the market (target was 80%) Irrigation facilities reached 3,066 households against the target of 600. The project emphasised access of these facilities to disadvantaged groups. These beneficiary farmers increased the cropping intensity by 300%; and was able to convert barren land into farm land. For example in a remote Village Development Committee of Jumla, irrigation tripled the yield of potato, doubled the productivity of wheat and increased the productivity of rice by 50%.
