87 | CA-3-A032041001 | 2025-03-04T06:33:31 | Promoting Sustainable Agriculture in Borno State | The Promoting Sustainable Agriculture in Borno State (PROSAB) project aims to improve the livelihoods of resource poor farmers and their income generating capabilities through interventions that increase agricultural productivity while reducing environmental and land degradation. The project's objectives are to: a) increase the sustainable agricultural productivity of male and female farmers; b) improve access of male and female farmers to agricultural input and output markets; c) reinforce policies for the sustainable management of land, crops, and livestock; and, d) strengthen the capacities of project partners in the implementation of project activities. The PROSAB team has built partnerships with the Borno State Agriculture Development Program in charge of extension services, the University of Maiduguri (the capital of Borno State), and the Community Research for Empowerment and Development, a local non-governmental organization. The PROSAB team uses a participatory approach in the mobilization of communities in order to engage them fully in the success of this initiative. The project is expected to improve food security and to reduce environmental degradation in Borno State. | Closed | 2003-09-24T00:00:00 | 2009-10-30T00:00:00 | ["Nigeria 100.00%"] | IITA - International Institute for Tropical Agriculture | ["Food crop production 50.00%", "Livestock 25.00%", "Agricultural services 25.00%"] | 7154761.29 | Results achieved as of the end of the project (January 2010) include: (1) Striga (a parasitic weed that has devastating effects upon crops) resistant technologies (i.e. crop rotation and improved seed variety) and drought resistant varieties have been made available to 949 farmers, including 433 women; (2) Test plots using these new technologies have shown that agriculture productivity has nearly doubled; and (3) Improved crop management practices in targeted communities resulted in up to a 102% reduction in Striga population in cowpea fields, up to 102% reduction in maize fields, and up to a 76% reduction in sorghum fields. | Project-type interventions | Bilateral | Aid grant excluding debt reorganisation | Global Affairs Canada | WGM Africa | Pre-APP | ["Gender equality", "Environmental sustainability (cross-cutting)", "Participatory development and good governance", "Trade development", "Biodiversity", "Climate change mitigation", "Climate Change Adaptation", "Urban issues", "Desertification", "Children's issues", "Youth Issues", "Indigenous Issues", "Disability", "ICT as a tool for development"] | ["1000000.00", "1805841.00", "1467520.00", "1411743.00", "1564896.00"] | ["9.05785 7.49508"] | ["2003000574"] | ["IITA - International Institute for Tropical Agriculture "] | ["7154761.29", "500000.00", "298854.00", "390904.00", "320577.00", "298941.00", "359720.00", "328324.00", "302938.00", "465107.00", "125029.00", "251215.00", "500000.00", "327854.00", "324680.00", "260088.00", "232147.00", "201375.00", "-382971.00", "119255.00", "382971.00", "382971.00", "163387.00", "250643.00", "107529.00", "274582.00", "188880.00", "25000.00"] |
