96 CA-3-A032110001 2025-03-04T06:33:31 Support to Basic Education in Nicaragua This initiative helps the Government of Nicaragua achieve the goals and objectives of the Education for All movement. The initiative emphasizes school improvement, increasing primary school enrolment, improving the quality of primary education, as well as improving the governance and management capacities of community and education officials at all levels. CIDA works closely with the Ministry of Education and the donor community involved in the education sector to support annual work objectives based on agreed-upon education strategies and activities. This project promotes primary education for boys and girls and gender equality. In addition to Canada's contribution to this program, CIDA also has responsibility for the management and delivery of an additional $45 million contribution to the initiative from the Government of the Netherlands. This in turn has contributed to increased access, quality and relevance of education as demonstrated by an increase in primary enrolment rate from 87.3% to 90.7%, a reduction of adult illiteracy rate from 20% to 3.3%, a revised Institutional Development Plan - the political framework that guide all actions in the education sector - endorsed by the international community, and satisfactory external audits.
